OUR SERVICES

Family Trusts

It is estimated that there are between 200,000 and 300,000 Trusts in New Zealand.  Over the years, Trusts have had a reputation as being used for tax purposes, obtaining government assistance, or avoiding past estate and gift duties.   The Trusts Act 2019 changed the rules and added additional compliance, not to mention the imposition of a 39% tax rate!  While Trusts continue to have a valuable role in protecting assets for future generations, are you confident your Trust still meets your needs?  With decades of experience, our team can work with you and your legal advisor to ensure your structure is still fit for purposes and will continue to fulfill your objectives.

Our advice comes on top of experienced and cost-effective accounting and tax compliance services for Trusts and Estates.

Investments & Investment Property

Investment property comes with many challenges - interest deductibility, loss ring-fencing, Look-Through-Companies, tax consequences of development, rezoning and subdivision, the brightline test, AirBnB and more.  Our team can help you navigate the rules, make sure you are taking advantage of what you can, and not falling foul of the tax rules.

Investments and investment portfolios also present compliance issues - from Foreign Investment Funds, Kiwisaver PIR rates, overseas tax credits and double tax agreements, we've seen it all.

Estate Accounting

Executors of a Will will usually work with the family legal advisors to administer an Estate in accordance with the wishes of the deceased person.  This can often involve dealing with the Inland Revenue Department, and distribution and accounting issues, sometimes over many years.  We have decades of experience and expertise in dealing with all aspects of Estates and work closely with your legal advisors to make a difficult time as stress-free as possible.

Business Valuation

There are many reasons for wanting to know what your business is worth - looking to sell (or buy), relationship disputes, bringing on new shareholders or family succession.  Often your business is an integral part of long-term financial planning, so our business valuation services can add valuable insight into how to groom your business for sale and maximise its value.

Unlike more tangible assets such as property or vehicles, business value is much harder to pin down, and it can be dangerous to use rules of thumb.  We look at your business holistically, deep-dive into the numbers and use our acknowledged expertise to provide valuation reports that can stand up to scrutiny and provide a great base for negotiation.

Forensic Accounting

Financial records can often be mystifying or in very poor shape.  This makes it difficult to understand whether everything is as it should be - have you been the victim of theft or fraud? is important information being deliberately hidden from you?

We have many years experience in piecing together financial data and digging down to find out what has really happened.

Relationship Property

Sadly a large number of relationships end in separation or divorce, and it is still quite rare for this to be contemplated and organised at the outset, which can often result in acrimonious financial battles post-separation.  We review your situation and advise on what potential issues could arise and whether there are things you can discuss and change while still together to ensure future problems are minimised.

We work with the legal advisors on Relationship Contracting-out Agreements, appropriate business structures as well as valuations of relationship businesses, section 15 compensation claims etc

Litigation Support

When all other avenues have failed, legal action may be on the cards, whether it be High Court, Family Court or Mediation.

We provide litigation support to barristers, appearing in Court hearings as Expert Witnesses, agreeing to and complying with High Court rules.  This includes providing relevant financial advice, whether it be valuation, relationship property or forensic accounting.
